December Newsletter

Hello and happy holidays! This is Amanda with Elkhorn Flying Dragons sending out an update on our schedule and December events.

First up, the deadline for any special ordered Christmas gear you may want under the tree is Wednesday, November 29th! While we will continue to have our standard gear, like Bo staves, that you can use as stocking stuffers (Master Nick has really long stockings) Santa will need to get some help from FedEx if you want something bigger, like a heavy bag or training dummy. Wednesday is also the deadline for our shirt order. If you can’t get in to the school before then, (or are feeling sneaky) call or email so we can add you to the list!

Second, This Saturday the second is both the NAKA Christmas party and the Elkhorn Christmas Parade. If you already requested Christmas party tickets, make sure that you pick them up BEFORE THE PARTY. We do not yet have word from the chamber about where our lineup spot will be, so watch this space. In the past we have lined up in the food court area of the fairgrounds at 11:30 am, and will probably be there again this year. Please enter through the armory gate, and dress for the weather.  Currently the forecast is for highs around 40, and sunny, but that could change by the time we get to the weekend. Regardless: gloves, warm coats, and good walking shoes are a must! Wear dark pants and we will be providing the uniform tops while they last.

Due to the parade we will not be having neither Aikido nor the new advanced class this Saturday (see below).

Third, we will be making some minor schedule changes:

  • We will be stopping Friday classes for the time being. Attendance dropped off sharply after the school year started, so we will revisit offering them again in the summer.
  • Friday tai chi will be moving back to Tuesday nights at 7:00 PM
  • We will be adding an invite only advanced class on Saturdays from 1:00-2:00. This will be in addition to the Monday Night 7-8pm classes
  • The weapons for the next 3 months (starting December 1) will be staff on Monday, and Kali/Nunchaku on Wednsday

Fourth, Starting January we are making a change in how we count classes for rank advancement. We have said numerous times that the beginner classes are geared towards students white belt through green belt.  Starting January 1st(1/1/24) beginner classes will no longer count towards rank advancement for students Brown stripe on up. We are not making this decision lightly. The reality is that high rank students attending the beginner rank classes has a detrimental effect on the ability of both lower ranks to learn and the higher ranks to get to their necessary material. We want to be clear that higher ranking students are welcome to attend these beginner classes, particularly if you want to attend 2 classes in a night to get more of a workout, but we will not be counting these classes towards rank advancement. Should you attend those classes anyway, you should be expecting to practice basics that would be more suitable for those white belt to green belt ranks.
