Learn more about Elkhorn Flying Dragons
The Elkhorn Flying Dragons were previously known as the Lake Geneva Flying Dragons, founded in 1969 by Mr. Scott Bartels. Mr. Bartels was an officer with the Lake Geneva police department and began instructing at the Lake Geneva YMCA.
At that time, the Lake Geneva Flying Dragons were affiliated with the American TaeKwonDo Federation. Mr. Bartels was the regional coordinator for that organization.
In 1973, he started his first county-wide police karate program. Two years later, Mr. Bartels published a handbook on Police Karate with Mr. Royal West. Mr. West took over the Lake Geneva Flying Dragons in 1976. In 1979, the Flying Dragons became affiliated with the American Kyukido Federation.
Since that time, many Kyukido instructors in the region began their martial arts careers in Lake Geneva: including Master Wayne Steinmetz of McHenry, IL, and Master Lloyd Holden of Janesville, WI. Bob and Audrey Perk are the current owners of the Elkhorn Flying Dragons. They took over operations February of 1995. The Flying Dragons have been a family-owned business ever since, with the help of their son, Nick and daughter, Rebecca. Since 1995, the Perks have taken over 100 of their students to their next black belt rank.
Over the years the Perks have been recognized for their accomplishments in the martial arts. In 1995 the whole family received Presidential Sports Awards for Martial Arts. In 1996 and again in 2001 Audrey was recognized as American Kyuki-Do Federation Black Belt Woman of the Year. In 1999, Audrey was recognized as an Outstanding Tournament Judge. In 2003, Bob was recognized as an Outstanding Tournament Referee. In 2010 the Perks became the first husband and wife team in the American Kyuki-Do Federation to earn the rank of Master together.
In March of 2002, the Perks moved the Lake Geneva Flying Dragons to their present location in Elkhorn, WI. As a result of this move, the name changed to Elkhorn Flying Dragons. The new 4200 square foot facility was built for the Flying Dragons. It is THE premier facility in the area. The most gratifying award came in 2004 when the Perks’ school was named “School of the Year” by the American Kyuki-Do Federation.
In 2014, the Elkhorn Flying Dragons became affiliated with the North American KiMuDo Association, a group dedicated to helping school owners serve their students. The Perks are looking forward to serving you!
